Measuring your Ketone Levels:
So how exactly are ketone levels measure? Well it turns out there are three are 3 ways I know of so far. Below I describe ways how to measure your ketone level with additional links to the measuring devices.
How To Measure Your Ketone Levels:
Blood:
Perhaps the most invasive way to measure your ketone is via a blood sample test strip. Although slightly uncomfortable at first. however you get use to it fast. This is the most accurate method I know of today. After about a month this method becomes second nature and you are almost able to do it on autopilot and without thinking.
Blood analysis works by measuring beta-hydroxybutyrate in blood, not acetoacetate or acetone.
Urine:
Unlike the blood sample method above. Urine testing is totally painless, no need to penetrate the skin. However this method may be a little inconvenient and potentially messy. This method is recommended for anyone getting started in the ketosis lifestyle as it is the cheapest option in the short run.
Urine analysis works by measuring the acetoacetate levels in the urine.
Breath:
This is the latest method of testing ketone levels I have come across. Breath testing has only just come onto the market. One annoying aspect present in both blood and urine analysis is alleviated with breath testing i.e. no consumables. No potentially expensive test strips to buy each time you want to test. Although this device is the most expensive option upfront it can definitely work out to be the cheapest in the long run as it is a once off investment.
Breath/Air analysis works by measures acetone in your breath.
